Town centre

There is still a market in Church Stretton on Thursdays and alternate Fridays and Saturdays, as well as a local produce and crafts market twice a month. The town centre has plenty of independent shops, and is known for the four-floor Stretton Antiques Market, which attracts visitors from across the country. There are more than 60 dealers here and the market is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, or 10:30 to 16:30 on Sundays. Other tempting shops include Chocolate Haven, which sells handmade chocolates, handmade fudge, nougat and Turkish delight, and the independent bookstore Burway Books. Shropshire Hills

There's a huge expanse of countryside to explore around Church Stretton, whether you want to go walking, horse riding, mountain biking or wildlife watching. The area is internationally renowned for its geology, and the Long Mynd heathland plateau dates back to the Precambrian period. Climb it on foot or drive up for excellent views of the countryside, as far as Cheshire and Snowdonia on clear days. The plateau is a popular place for gliding, hang-gliding and paragliding. You can even take a beginner's flight with the Midland Gliding Club. There's also an 18-hole golf course, one of the highest in the country. Wildlife fans should look out for wild horses, bats and wild birds, including skylarks, buzzards and the rare ring ouzel.

Visit Wenlock Edge, a Site of Special Scientific Interest over 400 million years old, and covered with ancient woodlands and rare flowers. Endless fossils are waiting to be found in its rocks, including corals and trilobites.

Acton Scott Historic Working Farm

The Acton Scott estate, owned by the Acton family for nearly 900 years, has a working farm which still uses 19th-century farming methods. Here you'll see heavy horses working the land and daily demonstrations of 19th-century techniques and skills - the wheelwright, farrier or blacksmith might drop in too. The farm was the location for BBC2's Victorian Farm series and has featured in several other shows. Normally open from March to November, it also offers day courses where you can learn Victorian skills, from ploughing to stonemasonry and wheelwrighting.

Eating and drinking

Van Doesburg's deli sells an extensive range of home-cooked quiches, salads, pies, casseroles, soup, sandwiches and cakes to take away, including vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options. You can also buy cheeses, olives, crackers, freshly baked bread and croissants, sauces, chutneys and more. Visit The Ragleth Inn, nearby in Little Stretton, for home-cooked pub grub and a large pub garden with lovely views, and trampolines to entertain the kids. At the timber-framed Kings Arms, which was built in 1593, there are cask ales, music nights and quiz nights.
