Sitting on the Bybrook River, and located near the town of Chippenham, Castle Combe features a number of quaint public buildings which have been in use since the very early days of the village, as well as a lavish manor house on the outskirts. There is also a motor racing circuit on the Castle Combe estate, which has gained the village a degree of popularity amongst petrolheads.
Village life unchanged for decades
Take a leisurely stroll down Castle Combe's idyllic lanes and you'll soon see why it is so popular with film crews. Sights like the market cross, court house and innumerable 15th-century cottages are all suggestive of a rural ideal that was long thought extinct. It's hard to believe that this sanctuary of English countryside living is just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Bristol.
Of particular note is the Parish Church of St Andrew, which was originally built in the 13th century and has been added to several times over the years. If you decide to visit, be sure to stop and see the medieval clock at the base of the tower, believed to be one of the oldest in the country.
Feel the wind in your hair
Castle Combe Circuit is located on the village estate, and promises a thrilling day out whether you choose to watch or get out on the track yourself. The track's long straights mean that it is among the fastest circuits in the country, and has hosted stars of the sport including Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees in the past. With passenger rides, track days and more available, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the thrill of a race day for yourself.
The circuit also plays host to a steam rally every May, meaning that if you prefer to experience life at a more sedate pace, this is the perfect time to visit.
A luxury getaway
In terms of accommodation, the Manor House Hotel and Golf Club provides everything you could possibly want for a relaxing stay. Opulent bedrooms, gourmet food and outstanding service all contribute to that 'extra special' feeling.
Other Castle Combe hotels are available for a range of budgetary requirements, including the Castle Inn Hotel, which also provides excellent food in a friendly atmosphere.
