Arisaig was once a thriving town. However, in 1801, as part of the Highland Clearances, many residents were forcibly shipped to Canada in order to make way for grazing sheep. A walk around the outskirts of town will uncover some eerie ruins, and through the thick bracken you can see all that remains of the crofter communities who used to inhabit the area. Never fear, though – the village has been reinvigorated by a number of developments that have breathed fresh life into Arisaig while still maintaining its secluded charm.
The modern Harbour Office is where you can catch a ferry to the islands. It also houses a lovely tearoom and gift shop. The tearoom offers homemade cakes, organic ice cream and delicious smoothies, along with lovely teas and coffees. From the gift shop you can purchase guides and maps for your exploration of the local area, as well as fishing equipment for all you amateur anglers.
After tea and cake, wander in to the middle of the village and visit the Land, Sea and Islands Centre. Opened in 1999, in what used to be an old blacksmith's cottage, the centre has breathtaking views of the Small Isles, a souvenir shop and exhibitions detailing the wildlife and history of the village – a history that includes some intriguing WWII tales of espionage.
From Arisaig hotels, head to the Marine to catch the famous sunset. As the sun disappears behind the islands, the sky becomes a kaleidoscope of blues, pinks and oranges.
Arisaig is a perfect spot from which to explore the surrounding country. It is situated on the legendary Road to the Isles, the route along the west coast of Scotland. A drive along the route takes in some of the most gorgeous natural scenery anywhere in the world.
If you're not a motor-head, catch the West Highland Line as it snakes up from Fort William to Mallaig in the north. Since you can't pause the train en route, you'll be craning your neck to drink up every drop of the achingly beautiful views. Buy a return ticket to ensure you don't miss anything.
Just out to sea from Arisaig lie the delightfully named islands of Rum, Muck and Eigg. Catch a small passenger ferry from the Harbour Office to these starkly beautiful rocky islands. They are collectively called the Small Isles and are perfect for exploring on foot. A large ferry runs from Mallaig, allowing you to explore every one of the many isles in the area.
After a few days among its whitewashed buildings, it'll not be hard to see why Arisaig was named ‘the safe place' and why it has been a source of sanctuary for thousands of years.
Dancing barefoot in the sand, soundtracked by the soft rhythm of the Atlantic waves - a typical night at the beachside nightclubs in Arisaig. Evenings here are nothing short of magical. Numerous options to eat, dance and let loose, all within a stone's throw of the picturesque seashore. From traditional ale houses with live folk music to avant-garde cocktail bars, Arisaig's nightlife presents a unique fusion of the Scottish spirit and contemporary fun. Sip proper Scotch whisky at The West Highland Bar, or engage in lively banter with locals at Arisaig Hotel's atmospheric lounge. Every establishment brims with charisma, offering an authentic Scottish experience that's difficult to forget.
Alternatively, discover the village's secret party spots - thriving pop-up party scenes hidden from plain sight! These aren't printed in travel maps nor mentioned in conventional guides, but the adventure of finding such elusive parties is part of Arisaig's charm. Warm up at a ceilidh, a traditional Scottish social event, held at the local pier. Here, travellers are welcomed to dance to fiddles and accordions, while soaking in the stunning views of Skye and Rum. Later, gravitate towards secret beach parties, often marked by lit torches leading the way under twinkling stars. After-party necessities are taken care of by surrounding Arisaig hotels, providing well-deserved comfort and luxury after a night of fun and frolicking.
Arisaig's summer concerts by the sea are another spectacular nightlife highlight. These staggering events offer a stage to some of Scotland's most talented musicians. This summer, do not miss out on the opportunity to watch these spellbinding performances with the sun setting on the turquoise sea behind them. Grab your travel buddies, order a round of cocktails, and watch the breathtakingly beautiful scenery around you transform from the light pastels of daytime to the deep, inky blues of the evening.
