Where to stay to be near the popular attractions
When planning a visit to Greece, finding the perfect spot that offers both comfort and proximity to the country's most engaging attractions can make all the difference. There are several areas and neighbourhoods that serve as prime locations for accommodation, particularly since they provide easy access to Greece's best-known sites.
Athens, the vibrant capital of Greece, stands as a preferred location for many. Located in the heart of the city, the Plaka district is renowned for its proximity to historic sites, such as the ancient Acropolis and the vibrant Monastiraki marketplace. Hotels in this area exemplify traditional Greek architecture and offer impressive views of the city's historic skyline.
For those desiring a beachside retreat, the island of Crete provides an ideal backdrop. The northern coast, including the city of Chania, with its picturesque Venetian Harbour, and the airport city of Heraklion, offer an array of hotels within reach of beautiful beaches and archaeological sites, including the ancient Minoan Palace of Knossos.
Santorini is another popular hotspot, primarily Fira, the capital, and Oia, recognised for its stunning sunsets. Accommodation options vary from high-end luxury hotels to more budget-friendly options. The compelling view of the caldera, the volcanic islands and the Aegean Sea from the white terraces makes these locations undoubtedly prime choices.
For a more cultural immersion, Thessaloniki in Northern Greece is a favourable choice. A lively city with a blend of ancient and modern charm, Thessaloniki provides easy access to the White Tower, the Archaeological Museum and the beautiful promenade along the Thessaloniki waterfront.
Finally, the town of Nafplion in the Peloponnese might be lesser-known compared to Athens or Santorini but has compelling appeal for those interested in Greek history and culture. This former capital boasts iconic sites like the Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi Castle. Its compact size makes it a town easy to explore, with most hotels located within walking distance from top attractions.
Where to stay with family
Greece is a popular holiday destination known for its beautiful beaches, rich history and delicious cuisine. It is also a great place to travel with families, as there are plenty of options for accommodation that cater to people of all ages.
When it comes to choosing a neighbourhood to stay in, safety and child-friendly activities are key considerations. The Plaka neighbourhood in Athens is a popular choice for families, thanks to its pedestrian-friendly streets, inviting cafes and restaurants and proximity to major attractions such as the Acropolis. Another great option is the seaside town of Nafplion, which offers a more relaxed atmosphere and plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy.
One of the best options for families is to stay in an all-inclusive resort. These resorts offer a variety of activities and amenities, such as kids' clubs, water parks and family-friendly entertainment, making them a convenient and stress-free choice for parents. Some popular all-inclusive resorts in Greece include the Grecotel Creta Palace in Crete and the Sani Beach Resort in Halkidiki.
For families who prefer a more independent and authentic experience, there are also plenty of family-friendly hotels scattered throughout Greece. These include the Esperides Resort and Spa in Naoussa, which offers family rooms and a kids' pool.
In addition to choosing the right neighbourhood and hotel, it's important for families to consider the type of activities and experiences they want to have while in Greece. For those that want to spend their days in the sun, or enjoying water sports, then a beachfront hotel in a place like Corfu or Mykonos would be a great choice. On the other hand, those who prefer a more cultural experience might consider staying in a traditional village or a rural area where they can explore ancient sites and enjoy authentic Greek cuisine.
Where to find cheap hotels
Greece is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning beaches, ancient ruins and delicious cuisine. However, planning a trip to this beautiful country can often come with a hefty price tag. Accommodation costs can quickly add up, leaving little room in the budget for other activities.
One of the best ways to save money on accommodation in Greece is to stay in low-budget neighbourhoods. These are often found in less touristy areas, away from the vibrant city centres and popular beach towns. While these neighbourhoods may not have the same appeal as the more popular destinations, they offer a more authentic and budget-friendly experience. Omonia, Metaxourgeio and Kato Patisia in Athens are just a few examples of low-budget neighbourhoods with affordable hotel options.
For those looking for inexpensive areas for hotel stays, some of the smaller islands in Greece offer great value for money. Places like Naxos, Paros and Ios have a wide range of budget-friendly accommodation options, from small guesthouses to budget hotels. These islands also offer a more laid-back and authentic experience, away from the busy crowds of the more popular destinations.
Travellers who prefer to stay in well-known areas can find many cheap hotels or hotel chains in Greece. These are often located in the main tourist hubs and offer basic but comfortable accommodation at affordable prices. Some popular budget hotel chains in Greece include Hotel Ionis, Hotel Hermes and Pella Hotel, just to name a few. These hotels may not have all the luxuries of a five-star hotel, but they offer a clean and comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring.
When planning a trip to Greece, it's also essential for visitors to consider the timing of their visit to find the best deals on accommodation. High season in Greece is typically during the summer months, from June to August, when prices for hotels are at their peak. Those looking to save money should try visiting during the shoulder season, which is April to May and September to October, which can often result in lower hotel prices. Alternatively, visiting during the winter months can also offer significant savings.
