When visiting Zermatt, you cannot help but be captivated by the astonishing sight of the Matterhorn peak, which, at 4, 478m, is one of the highest peaks in the Alps. Zermatt is also a leading skiing destination, witnessing a tourism boom during the skiing season in the winter and spring.

In 2015, Zermatt marked the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, which took place on July 14th, 1865. British mountaineers Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Robert Hadow, Charles Hudson, Edward Whymper, French mountain guide Michel Croz, and Zermatt mountain guides Peter Taugwalder and his son climbed to the summit, although only three of the men: the Taugwalder guides and Whymper, survived.

The Klein Matterhorn cable car

One of the best ways to enjoy the phenomenal Alpine scenery is to take a cable car journey to the Klein Matterhorn, the second highest peak in the area, at 3, 883m. The cable car, which is the highest in Europe, is just 63m beneath the summit at its terminal, where, on a clear day, you can observe some of the highest mountains of Switzerland, France and Italy.

The Gornergrat railway

Offering more terrific mountain views, the The Gornergrat railway reaches a peak height of 3, 089m, which, to put things into perspective, is 1, 745m higher than the highest point of the British Isles. The route begins at 1, 605m at Zermatt Station, gradually ascending almost 1, 500m over a distance of 9.4km.

Day trip idea: Brig

Once awarded the coveted title of Alpine Town of the Year, Brig, a charismatic mountain town, has existed since the early medieval period, and is a very suitable base for winter sports enthusiasts and hikers. Try and find the time to see the enchanting Stockalper Palace, a Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance that was founded in the 17th century and was once the home of a wealthy silk merchant. Nearby is the magnificent Simplon Pass, where you can enjoy more uninterrupted panoramic views of the Swiss-Italian Pennine and Lepontine Alps.
