Hotels in Shipley
Set in a commuter suburb of Bradford, Shipley hotels are conveniently positioned for visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire and exploring the natural beauty of Shipley Glen.
Built in 1851 by the leading industrialist Sir Titus Salt, Saltaire is a Victorian model village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name of the town is a combination of Salt's surname and the River Aire that runs through the town.
Salt set up five mills along with houses for his workers, bathhouses, a hospital, a library, a school, a concert hall, a science laboratory and a gym. Because of this impressive scale, Saltaire was a vital step to finding a solution to the slums that existed at the time in nearby Bradford and is today seen as an important development in the history of 19th-century urban planning. Salt's Mill is no longer in use and has been renovated to include a number of shops and restaurants as well as a gallery dedicated to the celebrated artist David Hockney.
