Hotels in Ilfracombe

A seaside resort on the north coast of Devon, Ilfracombe is a charming place to stay if you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and sip traditional afternoon tea in a cosy harbour café.

History

The history of the area reaches as far back as the Bronze Age, when Dumnonii Celts built a hill fort on what is today known as Hillsborough. The name of the town itself is a mix of Anglo Saxon and Norse that roughly means, ‘the valley with the bad ford'. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of ‘bad fords' now in Ilfracombe, in fact the area was renowned as a safe port due to the natural shape of the harbour and has hosted ships war ships from the 12th century to the 19th century.

Writers and Artists

The picturesque surroundings of Ilfracombe have made Ilfrcombe hotels a popular destination for a number of famous writers and artists. George Eliot stayed in 1856 during a trip with George Henry Lewes. The author and poet James Allen lived in the town at the beginning of the 20th century along with his wife, the writer Lily L. Allen. More recently, the actor Peter Sellers first started his theatre career in Ilfracombe and the artist Damien Hirst currently owns several properties in the town.

Cycling and sailing

If you're looking for something a little more active than lounging in cafés and art galleries, the area is an ideal place to experience the great outdoors. There are a number of places to rent bikes and guides can be easily found with routes for all the family to enjoy. Head to the harbour and you'll be able to try everything from kayaking to sailing around the beautiful surrounding coastline.

Devon and Cornwall

If you're up for travelling a little further afield, Devon and Cornwall have a spectacular range of sights to see. A short drive to the east will take you to Exmoor National Park and a drive to the south will take you to Dartmoor National Park. Both of these boast stunning natural views and a range of exciting routes to amble along. If you want some retail therapy, BarnsSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION is a nearby town with a larger selection of shops while Exeter and Plymouth are both a few hours away by car – here you'll find everything from department stores to theatres and nightclubs.
