Chicago has an excellent collection of museums for you to explore. The best place to go is the Museum Campus which is a park that contains three of the city’s most notable museums, the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum.
The Adler Planetarium was founded in 1930, and has the fantastic Sky Theatre, which uses special technology to take you on a virtual reality tour through space and time. The planetarium also has a great gift shop selling exciting space-themed souvenirs. The Shedd Aquarium opened in 1930 and contains over 32,000 amazing fish.
The Field Museum of Natural History is the pick of the three and is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. You really won’t want to miss the museum’s Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil, which is the most complete in the world, and is affectionately known as Sue. If you’re feeling hungry after walking round all the museums you can head to The Field Bistro. The restaurant has a great menu offering locally grown produce prepared in a special open kitchen.
The lakefront Millennium Park is a fantastic place to visit if you want to explore some of the city’s famous public art. The most popular attraction in the park is the artwork made by Sir Anish Kapoor, locally known as the Bean but officially titled Cloud Gate. The mirrored-silver structure weighs 110 tonnes, and your trip to Chicago won’t be complete if you don’t pose for some holiday snaps in front of it. The park also has free public tours on offer, which provide interesting insights into the park’s many sculptures and features.
Art Institute of Chicago
If seeing Cloud Gate has left you wanting more, a brilliant place to visit next is the Art Institute of Chicago. The gallery is home to an exceptional collection of art from around the world including paintings by Picasso and Miró. There’s also a great selection of free talks and tours on offer.
