Holidays to Reykjavik
Reykjavik is famous for its stunning landscape and awe-inspiring natural attractions. Be sure to take a dip in one of the many natural thermal pools and spas and enjoy the sights and sounds of Reykjavík Old Harbour.
Out and about
Filled with top museums, trendy cafés and bars, excellent restaurants and natural wonders, Iceland's capital city has plenty to offer visitors. The National Gallery of Iceland with its collection of striking works, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, is a must-see for art lovers. Alternatively, the Living Art Museum (Nýló) focuses on contemporary visual art.
The National Museum of Iceland is a great place to go to learn all about the country's culture and its past, along with the Culture House on Hverfisgata. You won't be able to avoid the stunning architecture on display at Hallgrímskirkja church, a major landmark designed in 1937 that is visible from pretty much everywhere in the capital.
Pay a visit to Reykjavik between October 9 and December 8 to witness the Imagine Peace Tower – a piece of visual art designed by Yoko Ono that forms a tower of light rising from a well. For slightly more traditional evening entertainment, head to the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre to catch a live performance.
You don't need to travel far to appreciate the awesome natural beauty on Reykjavik's doorstep. Mount Esja dominates the city skyline and is a popular destination for day-trippers looking to make the most of the area's excellent walking trails and climbing routes.
Hundreds of thousands of people visit the geothermal beach at Nauthólsvík every year. Be sure to take your swimming costume and discover what happens when cold sea currents mix with hot geothermal water.
For the best choice of shops and boutiques you'll want to make for Reykjavik's downtown area. Major brand names, independent retailers and unique craft shops can all be found in the area around Laugarvegur and Skólavördustígur.
Alternatively, if you're searching for an indoor mall setting then consider a trip to Kringlan shopping centre. This major shopping destination is home to almost 200 stores, along with restaurants, a cinema, theatre and a library.
