Sightseeing
If it's sun, sand and water-based activities you're after during your visit to Guadeloupe then consider basing yourself on the island of Grande-Terre. Here you'll find tranquil stretches of shady white sand along with deliciously inviting blue lagoons. You'll find fantastic conditions for snorkelling and diving in the calmer waters off the island, along with plenty of excellent surf spots. Le Moule on the east coast is a favourite hangout with surfers as it enjoys reliable north-east swells. To the west of Grande-Terre, across a mangrove swamp, is the island of Basse-Terre. More mountainous terrain can be found here, along with Guadeloupe National Park. Take advantage of the incredible hiking trails on offer and explore the thick rainforest. Go in search of waterfalls or perhaps climb to the top of La Soufriere Volcano in the west of the island to enjoy stunning views out across the surrounding area.
Food and drink
There are more than 200 restaurants to visit across the five islands so you shouldn't have any trouble finding suitable dining options. Fresh fruits and vegetables play a significant part in traditional dishes and you can easily sample some of the local produce by visiting one of the numerous markets held each day. Keep an eye out for delicacies such as the pasty dish Tourment d’Amour, and Bokit, a deep-fried bread filled with either meat, fish or vegetables.
