A small landlocked Eastern African country with an extraordinary variety of wildlife, Uganda was once a British protectorate, and became an independent nation in 1962. The capital city
Visit the vibrant capital, Kampala, which is the home of the Uganda Museum and is overlooked by the impressive Rubaga Cathedral. You can also see the fascinating Kasubi Tombs, which is the burial site of four Buganda kings and is now on the exclusive UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
Entebbe
One of the most popular visitor destinations in the country, Entebbe is home to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and the beautifully landscaped National Botanical Gardens. It's adjacent to spectacular Lake Victoria, which is the largest lake in Africa and is 83 metres deep in its deepest section.
The Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Dominated by the awe-inspiring 5,109-metre Mount Margherita, which is the third-highest peak in Africa, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a breathtaking combination of dramatic snow-capped mountains and dense forests. This area is a major water source for the River Nile, and is often nicknamed the 'Mountains of the moon', because the peaks here are visible for many miles.
The Kibale National Park
Another important wildlife haven, the Kibale National Park has a significant chimpanzee population and more than 200 species of trees.
The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Featuring more than 160 tree species, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is another magnificent wilderness that contains various endangered animal species. It's one of the largest national parks in East Africa, and is a habitat for nearly 50% of the world's mountain gorillas.
The Queen Elizabeth National Park
The best-known national park in the county, the Queen Elizabeth National Park has numerous hippopotamuses, hundreds of bird species, and dozens of other mammal species.
The Murchison Falls National Park
Near the shore of scenic Lake Albert, Murchison Falls National Park is a habitat for an endless array of African animal species, and is also known as the Kabalega National Park. One of the main attractions here is Murchison Falls, a dramatic waterfall that is 43 metres high and was named by the British explorer Samuel Baker.
