Travel with love
In today's interconnected world, travel has become more than just a leisure activity; it's a chance to explore new cultures, landscapes, and experiences. Holidays offer unique opportunities to connect with wildlife, such as going on a safari in Kenya to see lions or swimming with dolphins in the ocean.
However, as conscientious travellers, we have a responsibility to ensure that our adventures do not harm the environment or the creatures that inhabit it. We must prioritise animal protection and promote animal welfare in all our journeys since there can be a risk of doing more harm than good.
But what is animal protection exactly? It involves safeguarding animals from harm, ensuring they are treated humanely, and preventing exploitation. Understanding what is animal protection helps us make informed choices that contribute to wildlife conservation and ethical tourism.
While zoos and sanctuaries offer opportunities for public education and conservation efforts, they also pose significant challenges to the welfare of the animals housed within them. As tourists, it’s not always easy to detect risky situations and avoid unethical experiences.
There can be a considerable difference between sanctuaries and zoos. Sanctuaries focus on the recovery and conservation of vulnerable species, prioritising animal rights, natural behaviours, and habitat restoration. They focus on rescue, rehabilitation, and reintroduction into the wild. In contrast, zoos often prioritise entertainment over animal well-being, which combined with unregulated and varying welfare standards, may lead to inadequate living conditions and forced performances.
Many species that evolved to thrive in their natural habitats may struggle in captivity due to inadequate living conditions or social environments. Moreover, some facilities exploit animals for entertainment purposes, subjecting them to harsh training methods or confining them in unnatural settings for human enjoyment.
According to the UNWTO, 7% of world tourism relates to wildlife tourism, making it a segment growing annually at about 3% [1]. Activities like safaris, scuba diving, and animal encounters allow travellers to experience nature's beauty and diversity. Who wouldn’t love to see sea turtles hatch eggs on a tropical beach at dawn?
From photographic safaris to whale-watching excursions, these activities benefit local communities economically while fostering appreciation for wildlife. However, irresponsible wildlife tourism can harm animal welfare and conservation.
Travellers must choose wildlife tourism operators that adhere to ethical and sustainable practices, prioritise animal protection, and support local conservation initiatives. By opting for responsible wildlife experiences, we can minimise our environmental impact while supporting efforts to protect biodiversity and preserve natural habitats.
For those of us who seek a more immersive experience, animal volunteer tourism offers opportunities to directly contribute to wildlife conservation while enjoying unique travel experiences.
Our tip: Look for sanctuaries and tourism activities that have both local certifications, such as WWF, World Animal Protection or American Humane, and recognised animal welfare standards, such as Animal Welfare Quality®. Together, these ensure proper care and ethical treatment, even in the absences of global certifications.
One example of promoting animal welfare in tourism is Thailand's Elephant Nature Park [4]. This sanctuary, founded by Sangduen Chailert, serves as a refuge for elephants rescued from exploitation in the tourism and logging industries.
Unlike traditional elephant camps, the park focuses on the well-being of its elephants, allowing visitors to observe them respectfully and learn about their lives and conservation needs.
As travellers, we are responsible for protecting the planet and its inhabitants. We can make a positive difference by choosing sustainable travel options, supporting ethical wildlife experiences, and advocating for animal welfare.
