Berlin at night

Merely mention Berlin to any well-travelled people in your life and we’re sure one of the first three things they say will be: “amazing nightlife”. And that’s because it’s completely true. Renowned for its varied night scene, Berlin is numbered among the clubbing capitals of the world. But that’s not all it offers. With a plethora of pubs, an incredible range of restaurants, and lots of places which could be classed as somewhere in between, you’ll always be sure to find something that more than meets your expectations. So once you finish reading this guide, you won’t be wondering what to do in Berlin for much longer.

Clubbing in Berlin

Let’s start with the main attraction for many people visiting the German capital – its clubs. You’ll find most clubs are located in the city’s central Mitte district as well as in Prenzlauer Berg, while Nollendorf Platz is the place to be if you’re in search of LGBTQ+ friendly venues. A really big part of the appeal of the best Berlin clubs is the techno music on offer. So if that’s a high priority for you, then you should most definitely head to the Warschauer Strasse area.

In terms of the best clubs in Berlin, the following list is regularly mentioned: Tresor is one of the original techno clubs and housed in an old power station. Berghain is another famed electronic venue, and it’s said their audiences need lots of stamina. Sunday Club is a more exclusive event held just once a month. But despite that, it has still gained a reputation as one of the friendliest nights around. Club der Visionaere is a canal-side venue with separate dance areas inside, and one which is actually built over a jetty on the water. Kitkat is the place to be if you’re feeling risqué. There’s an indoor swimming pool and some individual floors each dedicated to a specific fetish – so the message is: be sure to do your research before wandering into something you’re not expecting…

Best for: Dedicated clubbers
Must-do: Try out one of our top five.

Alternative Berlin

If you’ve clubbed your heart out for a few nights and are looking for a change of pace, never fear, Berlin has even more to offer. The Young African Arts Market is a beautiful riverside establishment which actually doubles as a beach club with dance areas, a concert hall, and even a basketball club. That means you could visit on three separate nights and have a completely different experience each time.

If you’re looking for a totally different way to spend your evening in Berlin, one of the best places to visit is the Chameleon Theatre, which has a great bar, a bistro-style restaurant and an entertainment centre. So while you eat and drink, musicians, acrobats and comedians provide the entertainment. But if you’re more of a Strictly Come Dancing fan, then head for the Clarchens Ballhaus. Compared to the hip venues we’ve already mentioned on this list, it’s a bit like going back in time. This club is a renovated ballroom spread out over two floors where you can dine and dance. And if your foxtrot is a little rusty, you can arrange some lessons too.

Best for: Those seeking variety
Must-do: Visit Chameleon Theatre for dining with entertainment

Rooftop Bars in Berlin

When you want to see the sun go down over this extraordinary city, you’d be forgiven for jumping straight on Google and typing “rooftop bar Berlin”, but thankfully, you don’t have to. Widely known as one of the best bars in Berlin, Klunkerkranach has a bar, restaurant, club and some incredible views from its wonderful rooftop location. So that means you can turn up for the view, grab a few cheeky selfies, and then stay there until the early hours of the morning – evening sorted!

If Klunkerkranach is looking a little full, the following rooftop bars are more than able to provide a similar facility: the Monkey Bar is found on the 10th floor of Hotel Bikini, which is (obviously) the top floor, and offers panoramic views and signature cocktails. Deck5 Skybeach does exactly what its name suggests, and provides a rooftop beach club. Meanwhile, Hotel de Rome is an exclusive alternative soaked in luxury, and Soho House offers a gorgeous pool you can paddle in, which is always set to a regular and wonderfully warm 26°C.

Best for: Exotic nightlife experiences
Must-do: Watch the sunset from Klunkerkranach

If you’re still looking for other things to do in Berlin, the Computer Games Museum is a fantastic place to unleash your inner-geek as you drool over the amazing gameplay exhibitions. Hipsters can rejoice in the floating cafés and shops found on Flutgraben Canal. And if you’re searching for a bit of live music before the sun sets, the city’s parks provide a ready platform for artists and street performers.
