The most fun things to do in Belfast

Belfast is a lively city in Northern Ireland which boasts a plethora of sights and attractions, from quirky museums to historic buildings. There’s plenty of ways to have fun, too, with family-friendly options ranging from arcade games to themed skill-based experiences. It’s also a very sporty city, with two of its most popular sports – ice hockey and rugby – accessible not only for the most dedicated fans, but for visitors who simply want a fun afternoon or evening out. And for those looking to make the most of the great outdoors, you can’t go far wrong with trying your hand at fishing.

1. Game of Thrones Escape Room

Kick-start your visit to Belfast with a themed experience at the Game of Thrones Escape Room . There are three rooms to choose from, where you’ll have just one hour to escape, through a series of clues, puzzles and codes. Just pick your comrades wisely, embrace the teamwork and hopefully you’ll make it back to the real world...

Best for: Logic, skills and tactics.

While you’re there: Head out on a GoT walking tour which guides you around various filming locations.

2. Go fishing

Although you’ll need to obtain a licence, going fishin’ is one of the most fun things to do in Belfast. There are different waters you can catch the likes of salmon and rainbow trout from, from loughs to rivers. One of the best spots to try your luck in is at River Bush, which isn’t far from the Giants Causeway. With a variety of places to choose from, it’s an accessible-friendly activity, with disabled hoists and boat fishing, as well as other options, available. Looking for fun things to do on your Belfast holidays? There’s a whole range of activities, experiences and attractions to choose from!

Best for: Nature.

While you’re there: Make a picnic out of it in the nearby countryside or park.

3. Odyssey Bowl

Whether it’s a rainy day or you simply want a bit of indoor fun, head to Odyssey Bowl. This 20-lane bowling alley is ideal for kids and adults who can get as equally competitive about scoring a strike as the other. If you need a break from knocking down the pins, try your hand at one of the pool tables or lose yourself in the arcade, with its virtual racing games, air hockey and dance pads.

Best for: Rainy days

While you’re there: Don’t miss Glo-Bowling – UV style!

4. Stena Line Belfast Giants Ice Hockey

Take in an ice hockey match at SSE Arena Belfast, which is the home of the Stena Line Belfast Giants. Although the team only formed in 2000, they’re the city’s only professional team and having the chance to watch them in action is certainly an event that shouldn’t be missed! Not only does it make a great day (or evening) out, but you’ll also gain a deeper insight into an increasingly popular sport in Belfast and Northern Ireland itself.

Best for: Spectator sports.

While you’re there: Nearby is W5, a science museum centre.

5. Lost City Adventure Golf

Let yourself vanish from the streets of Belfast and find yourself in Lost City Adventure Golf, another fun thing to do in Belfast for all the family. There are two 18-hole golf courses here that are jungle-themed: beware of thunderstorms, rainforest animals and other special, interactive effects! Plus, if you’re in a group with less than ten people, then there’s no need to book in advance; just show up!

Best for: Group activities.

While you’re there: Tuck into the refreshments on offer, from pizza to milkshakes and more.

6. Prison Island

At Prison Island, you’ll find your adrenaline pumping as you try to increase your points in each ‘cell’ through skill-based and physical games. It’s more Crystal Maze than an escape room, though, making it one of the most unique things to do in Belfast. With 25 rooms to choose from, this is teamwork at its finest – even when you have to meet the ‘Prison Guard’!

Best for: Themed activities

While you’re there: Continue the action at Urban Axe Throwing.

7. Ulster Rugby

Whether you’re a rugby fan or not, it’s hard not to enjoy a visit to Kingspan Stadium. This is where Belfast’s Ulster Rugby team play home matches, and the talent is certainly world-class. Up to 16,000 spectators descend to the stadium to watch their favourite team (there are four professional rugby teams in Northern Ireland), and best of all they’re a friendly bunch, so you might walk away with a few new pals! Watching an Ulster Rugby match at Kingspan Stadium provides a rich insight into a passionate part of Belfast’s sporting identity.

Best for: Socialising.

While you’re there: You can also take guided tours of the stadium.
