History and culture

Head north of Nha Trang and you'll soon reach the Po Nagar Cham Towers, dating from between the 7th and 12th century and still actively used as a centre of worship for Cham Buddhists. The north tower, Thap Chinh, dates from 817 is the most impressive and well worth the journey from the city centre. The 19th-century Long Son Pagoda is another important Buddhist site, set beside a magnificent 14m Buddha statue, and the 20th-century Nha Trang Cathedral is a striking example of the French Gothic architectural style.

If you're interested in learning more about the local Cham ethnic group, the Khanh Hoa Museum has a number of interesting exhibitions including a number of statues and historical artefacts. The Alexandre Yersin Museum is another popular museum, dedicated to Dr Alexandre Yersin who introduced rubber trees to Vietnam and helped to find the causes of Bubonic plague.
