Culture
Within Seattle there are a variety of ways to get around the city and visit its attractions. The monorail can take you to most places in downtown Seattle, and is a fun way to speed around the sights. The monorail was built for the 1963 World’s Fair, and so stops at the site. The fair continues today, hosting the Seattle Centre where you will be able to explore a whole host of activities such as public art exhibitions, gardens, museums and the famous Chihuly Garden and Glass House.
Saint James Cathedral is a spot of peace and calm in an otherwise busy city. The building itself is an impressive sight and can make a good stop on your tour of Seattle. Safeco Field is the local baseball stadium, a must-see for anyone new to American travels. The field hosts music and entertainment events as well as sports.
Seattle is a great city to learn more about the world, with an impressive array of museums and educational attractions. The EMP museum is a family friendly attraction that can keep the kids interested, whilst the museums of flight or history and architecture can make for a pleasant afternoon.
Architecture
The Seattle Public Library is an interesting and modern building as well as being conveniently central. Further afield is the Sky View Observatory. Used to look into space, it boasts some great views. The Space Needle is perhaps Seattle’s most iconic landmark, reaching 605 feet into the sky. Tours will take you up 520 of those feet to the observation deck, where you will be able to look out on the city.
If you are more interested in sculptures than buildings, the Fremont Troll is a must-see. Even more unusual than that is the Gum Wall, a multi-coloured wall totally covered in – as the name suggests – gum. Both of these attractions show just how quirky Seattle can be as a city.
Nightlife
Seattle is a renowned spot for theatre and opera, enjoying a large community of arts fans. For those more interested in the local watering holes, there are a great variety of bars and restaurants. Alibi Rooms are a hip and stylish place located just off Pike Place Market, where you will be able to get fresh seafood and a drink. Once you have a taste for the local fare, bars like 74th Street Ale House and the Admiral Pub will take good care of you.
