South London
South London is full of history, entertainment, eateries and fascinating places to shop. Book one of our South London hotels and explore the capital, south of the river.
Enjoy the peace and quiet of Barnes Common which is made up of meadows, woodland, rough grassland and heath that attracts a wide array of wildlife. And Clapham Common, with its 18th-century Holy Trinity Church, and Victorian bandstand, cafés, playgrounds and large swathes of grass, is a great place to relax.
Chessington World of Adventures is where you'll enjoy more than 25 theme park rides and admire the animals in the zoo and Sea Life Centre. Tooting has the second largest lido in the UK and an opulent Art Deco bingo hall – possibly the grandest place in which to regularly hear the words "clickety-click!"
There's much top-flight sport to savour south of the river. Twickenham is the home of English rugby union and the Oval in Kennington was the first ground to host an international Test match. Crystal Palace is not only the location of the titular Premier League football club but also the National Athletics Stadium. And racing fans are well-served at Kempton Park where the King George VI Chase takes place.
Mottingham near Eltham is where you'll find Jolpai Indian Cuisine which has an excellent reputation for its service and extensive and flavoursome menus. If you like delicious Japanese food and rock music then there's every chance you'll love Rock Star Sushi Bar in Merton. Greenwich is the location for Green Pea which is a coffee house by day, and a restaurant serving home-cooked Irish-English cuisine by night. And while you eat, admire the art because Green Pea is also a gallery and holds a brand new exhibition each month.
London's vibrancy goes up a gear come the night. Perhaps best of all the super clubs, the Ministry of Sound has been hosting world-famous DJs since 1991. Brixton is the home of Plan B, a club that attracts a loyal following with its leftfield acts. This is the place to enjoy music ranging from hip-hop to electronic music, and where the likes of Erol Alkan, Lady Sovereign and LCD Soundsystem have played. There are many other great live venues such as The Clapham Grand and Brixton Academy which regularly hosts top acts.
For large shopping centres, try Southside in Wandsworth, Surrey Quays in Rotherhithe and Bromley's Intu, where you'll find an appealing mix of high-street stores, cafés and restaurants.
We have a great choice of hotels all over South London. Rowhill Grange Hotel, Wilmington, is a splendid 18th-century manor house, in the Kent countryside. For a delightful riverside stay, The Runnymede-on-Thames in Egham is hard to beat. And Wandsworth's Holiday Inn, near the centre of London, is good value and has a host of amenities.
