Oxford Street is London’s iconic shopping destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. Featuring the flagship stores of many high street brands and lots of things to see and do nearby, it’s a convenient location to spend some time.
Clothes and Chocolate
Shoppers on Oxford Street are spoilt for choice, with many high street stores here, such as Primark, River Island, and Top Shop.
Just a short walk away from many cheap Oxford Street hotels, is Carnaby Street, renowned during the 1960s for its boutique stores and a haven for mods and rockers. This attractive, pedestrianised shopping district has lots of interesting shops, including world-famous rock jewelers, The Great Frog, the Official Dr. Martens Store, and Choccywoccydoodah, with its delicious range of bespoke chocolate treats.
Culture Club
Tucked away on Ramillies Street is the Photographer’s Gallery which showcases both historical and contemporary photography, with exhibition spaces, a café, and bookshop. It’s a great place to soak up some culture, with previous displays examining topics such as early colour photography in Russia, and works by Andy Warhol, and David Lynch.
Tasty Treats
Whenever you get hungry, there are lots of tasty options near the hotels off Oxford Street. Yumchaa on Berwick Street is a laid-back café with a fine selection of teas and cakes, while Kati Roll on Poland Street serves inexpensive, tasty Indian snacks (the paneer cheese roll is particularly delicious). For a range of tasty Chinese buffets, head down to Chinatown, just off Charing Cross Road. It’s a little walk down from Oxford Street but well worth it for the atmosphere.
Parks and Recreation
When you want some peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, Hyde Park is just a short walk from Marble Arch. This extensive parkland has many attractions, including the Diana Memorial Fountain, Speakers’ Corner (a place for public speeches and debate), and the Serpentine Lido. There’s also a boating lake, and the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen, and Lido Bar and Café for when you get hungry.
Beer and Cocktails
There’s a lively club and bar scene just around the corner in Soho when you get tired of shopping. The French House is a favourite haunt of many locals and serves a delightful house beer in strawberry, pear, and plum flavours.
LAB (London Academy of Bartenders) on Old Compton Street has a fantastic range of cocktails, served by some of London’s leading lights on the scene. Choose from over 100 cocktails, including Apple Vanilla Margarita and the infamous Fireball Shooter.
