Kensington is an affluent, stylish district of London with plenty of things to see and do right on your doorstep if you’re planning a stay here. If you’re booking a hotel near Kensington, be sure to check out its fantastic selection of museums.
The Natural History Museum is a great experience for all the family, with a large dinosaur skeleton in the main hallway and a beautifully ornate interior. You can even have a sleepover there if you book in advance – perhaps one of the more unusual Kensington hotels. Equally prestigious is the Victoria and Albert Museum opposite, with its impressive collection of objects related to decorative arts and design. Be sure to check out the gorgeous, tiled tearooms where you can have an afternoon tea.
The Science Museum also has many fascinating exhibits, such as Stephenson’s Rocket, documentation of the first typewriter, and medical items from the collection of Henry Wellcome.
Fans of Victorian houses will enjoy Leighton House Museum, the former home of painter and sculptor, Frederic Leighton. Its rooms are decorated with gorgeous tiles and marble, and the west wall alcove has a beautiful water feature which would be as equally at home in one of the luxury hotels near Kensington.
There are many hotels near to Kensington High Street, a shopper’s paradise with lots of upmarket and high street favourites from Marks & Spencers and River Island to Karen Milan and Stella McCartney fashionwear in Barkers Arcade. Above the big store at 99 Kensington High Street, you’ll see a row of Virgin flags that mark the spot of the amazing Kensington Roof Gardens, previously the largest roof garden in Europe.
For more nature, check out the Royal Park of Kensington Gardens, home to 5,000 acres of parkland and hundreds of statues, buildings, and memorials. Inside the park, you’ll also find the Serpentine Galleries which has exhibited works by artists such as Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Henry Moore, and Bridget Riley.
