The Royal Palace

The enormous Royal Palace is one of the most enchanting landmarks in Asia, and has been the home of the Kings of Cambodia since the mid-19th century. See the magnificent open-air Moonlight Pavilion, wander around the imposing Throne Hall, and observe the King's official residence, the Khemarin Palace, before visiting the Silver Pagoda with its intriguing Buddha statues.

The Independence Monument

In the city's attractive Sihanouk Boulevard, the Independence Monument was erected in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia's independence from the French in 1953. This striking monument was pioneered by the successful Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann, who also designed Phnom Penh's Chaktomuk Conference Hall, National Sports Complex, and several other buildings in the city.

Wat Phnom

On Phnom Penh's only hill, Wat Phnom (a monastery temple)) was the site of a pagoda in the 14th century and is an important place for prayers. The landmark, which marks the centre of the city, also features a large 15th-century stupa, and was redesigned on numerous occasions from the 19th century onwards.

Wat Ounalom

In the charismatic riverside area of Sisowath Quay, Wat Ounalom is another famous monastery temple that is now the most important religious building for Cambodian Buddhists. This formidable sight, which includes 44 structures, has existed since the 15th century and offers excellent views of the city from its third floor.

Other places of interest

Choeung Ek, another iconic Buddhist stupa, commemorates the victims of the devastating Khmer Rouge conflict of the 1970s, which took place a short distance to the south of the city. You should also consider visiting the National Museum of Cambodia, where you can see thousands of archaeological and historic artefacts from the prehistoric period to the modern era.
