Explore Perugia on foot

The best way to get around Perugia is on foot. The good news is that a series of escalators can take you up into the old town via the Rocca Paolina, a medieval citadel.

Visit the Porta Marzia - an Etruscan city gate built in 300BC; the Fontana Maggiore, a medieval fountain made in the 13th century as part of Perugia's independence celebrations; the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori (Town Hall) built in Italian Gothic style. The list goes on and on. Everywhere you turn in this city's narrow cobbled streets are beautiful examples of ancient architecture. After a long day of exploring, stand outside the cathedral to watch the sunset over the Umbrian countryside below.

Art

Once you've had your fix of history, get some culture at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria which houses a collection of paintings from the 13th to the 19th century, featuring artists such as Perugino and Benozzo Gozzoli, while the San Pietro Church and Abbey is filled with fine art including a must-see Caravaggio.

Music in Perugia

As the base for the Umbrian Jazz festival which takes place in July every year, Perugia is a hub for music-lovers. Over the year, the festival has attracted pretty much every famous jazz player in the world, and the city takes on a very special atmosphere during the festival with people flooding into the historic centre of the city for concerts in this unique setting. Music Fest Perugia, which takes place in August, has a classical music programme which is performed in some of Perugia's most stunning buildings.

Eating and drinking

Most visitors head away from the historic centre to the ‘downtown' of Perugia for their lunch or dinner. Walk down the main street starting at the Piazza Duomo and ending with the dramatic view of the city's churches and the Umbrian countryside, and you'll find many options for eating out. Hotel Brufani offers superb regional cooking, and has a particularly delicious range of olive oils. If you're after a charming and traditional pizzeria, La Mediterranea is the place to go to watch your dinner being slid onto the stone hearth of the pizza oven. There's Italian food for every budget on this busy street.

Nightlife

If you want to stay out beyond your last sip of Limoncello, there are plenty of venues catering to the local student population. Cafés, bars, ‘disco-pubs' and discos are all popular haunts for Perugians. Bar hop between cheap and cheerful dives and glamorous bars and you might even end up seeing the dawn over the Umbrian landscape after a particularly big night out.
