Palmanova was created with the notion of being a city of perfection. The idea was to come up with a design that made Palmanova fortified, while taking into account the aesthetic sensibilities of its denizens. Designed with almost mathematical precision by architect and artist Vincenzo Scamozzi, the concentric walls are intersected by spoke-like borghi (streets). The city was such an effective fortress that Napoleon utilised and adapted it and to this day there is an Italian army garrison stationed there.
At the very centre of this citta stellare, or 'star city', is Piazza Grande which was constructed with Istrian stone. If you walk along any of its three main streets to the perimeter of the city, you will arrive at the outskirts in around ten minutes. One of the piazza's most striking features is its cathedral. Built in 1603, you'll notice that this duomo's peculiarly short bell tower was fully intended so that that it couldn't be seen by invaders outside the city walls.
A great way to learn about Palmanova's wartime significance is at the Civic Historical Museum and the Military Historical Museum. Spanning the years from 1593 to WWII - when Austrian regiments were stationed in the city - you'll discover the story of Palmanova in times of war and peace.
Prominent food and wine magazine, Gamebero Rosso, nominated Caffetteria Torinese as the best Italian bar and it has proved a popular eatery in Palmanova. The atmosphere and quality of the food has been oft-commented upon and you'll find a good selection of coffees too. Whether you fancy a pasta meal, a sandwich or a kebab, Le Zagare has proved a hit with the locals. And Osteria Al Cappello is good for a coffee or a glass of wine, and serves a home-cooked menu.
Within the city itself there are a handful of shops and banks, and several cafés and bars. For a wider shopping experience there's the Palmanova Outlet Village, about three mile south west of the city. The outlet contains around 90 stores, a selection of restaurants, cafés and bars. Kids will enjoy the play area and the outlet provides free stroller rentals. During the summer various events, including live performances, are held here.
