See the city

In Zagreb there are a variety of ways to explore the beautiful Eastern European scenery. Segway tours are becoming increasingly popular compared to the traditional walking and river tours of the city. Inside Zagreb you’ll find the large European-style Jelacic Square, where you can see an impressive statue of one of the city’s 19th-century governors amongst various cafés and shops.

Architecture and sculptures are all over the city, so plan your route carefully in order to take in everything you want to see. A visit to the impressive Lotrscak Tower will give you chance to see some of the city’s original 13th-century defences. From the top of the tower’s spire you will be able to see the Cathedral of the Assumption, which sits in front of the ornate Holy Mary Monument. Once you have a taste for Zagreb’s famed statues you may wish to move on to The Well of Life, sculpted by Ivan Mestrovic and set in a prime position outside The National Theatre. Just around the corner is another of Mestrovic’s works, the Nikola Tesla sculpture. Carved from stone it displays the former scholar deep in thought.

Places to eat

No Zagreb holiday is complete without enjoying the authentic Croatian food. The city has plenty of popular eateries if you’re interested in generic European fare, but the best places to go will serve Croatian food first and foremost. Vinodol is a popular destination, whether you live in the city or are just visiting. The restaurant enjoys a pretty, terraced dining area in the sunny months, or an impressive dining hall with vaulted stone ceilings if the weather’s chilly. Elsewhere Iva I Marica is a quaint place to go if you’ve been enjoying the European feel of Croatia. The restaurant is themed around the story of Hansel and Gretel, with a gingerbread décor and traditionally dressed waiters.

Museums

The Zagreb City Museum is a great way to learn more about the history of the city and country too, but there are also some more unusual museums to visit. The Museum of Broken Relationships was 2011’s most innovative European museum, and makes for a great educational afternoon. If you want to continue the sculpture viewing then Atelier Mestrovic contains a range of impressive creations.
