A well-preserved Grade I-listed landmark, Berkeley Castle existed more than 800 years ago, when it was rebuilt by the Berkeley family, who still live here. Cirencester
In the Roman Empire, Cirencester was called Corinium and was already known for its successful textiles industry and flourishing forum. The settlement is also renowned for its pre-Norman minster church, and still contains the remnants of its Roman amphitheatre, which is one of the largest in the country.
Westonbirt Arboretum
Another short drive from Wotton-under-Edge, the Westonbirt Arboretum, which is also called the National Arboretum, was planted in the Victorian era and contains thousands of trees and plants across an area of around 600 acres. The site, one of the largest tree collections in Europe, if not the world, is best viewed in October or November, when much of the tree foliage transforms into vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow.
