Bird watchers, fossil hunters and walkers will enjoy visiting the Naze, from which the town gets its name. A peninsula of rapidly eroding cliffs and foreshore just north of the town, it is an important area for migrating birds and contains a small nature reserve. The cliffs on the naze, which are a Site of Specific Historical Interest, contain a base of 54 million-year-old London Clay. This is overlaid with a two-million-year-old deposit of Red Crag which contains a large number of fossils, including sharks teeth and whale bones.
Close to the open area of the Naze, the Naze Tower can be found, an 18th-century Georgian lighthouse which is now a museum and viewpoint. The tower was once a navigational sea mark, built in 1720 to aid shipping, and was renovated in 2004 by a local family. Nowadays visitors can climb to the top of the tower for fabulous views, or visit the museum inside which tells the history of the tower. There are tea rooms inside on the first and second floors, serving hot and cold lunches and snacks.
Walton's pier is the third-longest in the country and was originally built in 1830 to land goods and passengers from steamers.
