The magnificent abbey from which the town takes its name has in fact been the site of at least five different buildings. The first was constructed some time in the seventh century and was a wooden church on flint foundations. The third church to be built here was done so at the behest of King Harold II, who later died at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Harold is said to be buried in the grounds of the present abbey.
The Epping Forest District Museum is housed in a Grade II listed Tudor building in the town. The museum tells the story of the local area and the people who have lived and worked here from 100s of years ago, right up until the present day.
Visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills and Museum, where you can learn the secret history of gunpowder, explosives and rocket propellants from various exhibitions. Built on the site of a former gunpowder factory, the museum hosts living history and battle re-enactment events most summer weekends.
Families will love Lee Valley Park Farm with its large variety of animals to meet, greet and cuddle. There are play areas and tractor trailer rides around the working dairy farm. Visitors can enjoy other areas of Lee Valley too, with over 26 miles of traffic-free trails, ideal for walking, cycling or running along. Find various species of wildlife including over 200 recorded bird species at Fisher's Green.
The more adventurous visitor will love a trip to the Lee Valley White Water Centre which offers a range of activities from canoeing and kayaking to white-water rafting, in the same venue that Team GB won their medals during the 2012 Olympics.
