The Warene family constructed Reigate Castle and by 1150, a new town had been built under this. In 1648 the castle was demolished and what remained became Reigate Caves, which were excavated to create the Reigate Castle Tunnel to connect to the town, believed to be Europe's first road tunnel. Today, that very same castle ground forms an attractive public park.
Soak up the history of this conservation town by visiting the Reigate Caves. The Wealden Cave and Mine Society conducts tours of this historic underground heritage, which includes the Baron's Cave in the castle grounds and the east and west caverns in Tunnel Road.
