Heritage sites and architecture

The Holy Trinity Church is Long Melford's parish church, a village church of remarkable size and grandeur. The church has a long history, dating from the time of Edward the Confessor and still held at the heart of the Long Melford community today. The church is famous and often visited for its striking architectural features, including original mediaeval stained glass.

The first of Long Melford's two stately homes is Melford Hall, a National Trust property that sits on the edge of the Long Melford green and boasts fine Tudor architecture. A visit to Melford Hall is incomplete without surveying the family's eclectic collection of art, from Beatrix Potter sketches to Chinese porcelain. Having welcomed Beatrix Potter as a guest in its past, Melford Hall is now the proud owner of the original Jemima Puddleduck toy.

Long Melford's second grand house is Kentwell Hall, a moated Tudor mansion situated in extensive landscaped gardens. Guests are welcome to explore the house and grounds between March and October each year. Other attractions at Kentwell Hall that will interest visitors with children include a rare-breed animal farm, entertaining Tudor and Victorian re-enactments and an award-winning maze.

The great outdoors

There are fantastic outdoor adventures waiting outside of all Long Melford hotels. The Gainsborough Trail is Long Melford's 12.5-mile walk through Sudbury and the Stour Valley to discover the landscapes and sites that inspired Thomas Gainsborough's famous paintings of the area. The trail offers visitors the opportunity to explore water meadows, see old railway bridges and spy on the local wildlife in its natural environment.

If you're feeling tired, take a breather at Long Melford's enormous village green or meander up the village's high street and admire the longest tree-lined village street in England. Poetry lovers can also pay homage to the World War I poet, Edmund Blunden, in the churchyard of the Holy Trinity Church.
