Nearly 900 years old, Helmsley Castle is what remains of a medieval stronghold that overlooks the town. These impressive ruins include a large museum where you can learn about the castle's evolution from firstly, an imposing fortress, then a Tudor mansion, next a fort of the Civil War and, latterly, a Victorian ruin. In the shadow of the castle sit five acres of walled gardens which were created a quarter of a century ago and are still providing floral beauty to this day.
A mile south-west of Helmsley lies a splendid Grade II listed stately home which was completed in 1713. The house sits within the expansive grounds of Duncombe Park, from which lead a variety of countryside walks. One of the trails takes you back to Helmsley via a very scenic route. Among the park's main attractions is the International Centre for Birds, which opened in 2013 and holds the largest collection of birds of prey in the North. See how predatory birds such as falcons, eagles and owls are trained. And watch regularly held flying demonstrations. It's clear that the handlers adore their feathered friends and they're extremely knowledgeable about them too.
Journey a little deeper into North Yorks Moor National Park to find spectacular Rievaulx Abbey, which lies in the Rye Valley. A stroll through the woods and up a nearby hill takes you to Rievaulx Terrace, which provides incredible views of the abbey. This grass-covered terrace features two temples at either end which are examples of follies constructed in the mid-18th century.
