Described by Country Life as "one of the country's truly great gardens", Borde Hill Garden is English Heritage-listed and consists of 200 acres of parkland and woodland. The grounds afford magnificent views across the Sussex Weal and the Ouse Valley. The 17-acre formal gardens are made up of nine smaller gardens, each with their own style and all providing an explosion of colour throughout the year. The parkland is a great source of woodland walks where you'll see an abundance of plants, shrubs and trees which hail from all over the world, including alders, acers and broadleafs.
In the grounds of Nymans you'll find the ruins of a beautiful Gothic mansion built in the late 19th century which was partially destroyed by fire in 1947. The beautiful wooded environs provided the inspiration for the house which was conceived by Ludwig Messel as a home for his family. Messel set about creating gardens full of exotic plants and delightful lawns which can still be appreciated today. You can tour the garden or follow nature trails and take part in geocaching treasure hunts. And the house contains an ever-changing exhibition and a second-hand bookshop.
A 25-minute walk north through the woods takes you to a glorious mid-19th century viaduct that was built to convey trains from Brighton to London. Consisting of 37 semi-circular arches, this Grade II listed brick structure is a magnificent, eye-catching legacy of classic industrial design.
Close to the viaduct is Ardingly Reservoir which consists of 11 square miles of water. The spot is a hive of activity, offering the opportunity for canoeing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing and power boating. The reservoir also provides a fabulous range of options for anglers to land tench, carp, pike and other fish – whether fishing on a boat or from the bank.
The Coach and Horses is a classic English pub that has served the community since 1847. This award-winning, family-run free house offers real ales supplied by local breweries and even wines from the neighbouring Bluebell vineyard. The menu is prepared from locally sourced ingredients. Children and dogs are welcome. There is also an 'adult's only' terrace. Borde Hill is the location of Jeremy's, another award-winning establishment that has built up quite a following in the area for its creative cooking and friendly service. And if you want to learn how local cheeses are made, visit High Weald Dairy. With a quarter of a century of experience, the dairy provides the opportunity for you to get involved and make a cheese from start to finish, and sample the finished product.
The town is well served by the Orchards Shopping Centre which offers a good selection of well-known high street retailers and independent stores.
Haywards Heath truly comes alive when the sun goes down, with a vibrant nightlife scene that rivals any big city. Haywards Heath hotels often plan social mixers where tourists can mingle, making them a perfect base for your night escapades.
