Adventure town
Bowness is on England's largest natural lake and as such, it is a mecca for water sports and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're one of the wetsuited pilgrims, or simply an adventurous visitor, there is no better way to experience Windermere than from a boat. At Windermere Canoe and Kayak you can hire any number of watercraft, including kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. So whip on your swimmers and immerse yourself, literally, in your surroundings.
For a slightly higher octane experience, Total Adventure on Ferry Nab Road caters for the more serious adrenaline junkies. Activities on offer include abseiling, gorge scrambling and the ever-popular zip-wire. There is more relaxing fun in the way of archery and orienteering.
Armchair adventurer
If your idea of a good time does not necessarily involve wearing a helmet, then Bowness has got plenty to offer nonetheless. There are a great many wonderful eateries in the town catering to whatever tastes you might have. Porto is one such establishment, serving up modern British and European cuisine to an ever expanding crowd of hungry faithfuls.
To those looking for a bit of spice after a day out on the lake, Shahib's is the perfect antidote. In the centre of town, this Indian restaurant can boast the best curry this side of the Curry Mile and is well worth a visit.
For a quirkier, more traditional option, Hole in t'Wall offers a truly unforgettable dining experience, although bear in mind that you may have to share your table with a moose, for the restaurant's walls are covered in stuffed creatures of all shapes and sizes.
Peter Rabbit and Friends
If you prefer your cuddly creatures illustrated and unstuffed, Bowness is also home to the wonderful World of Beatrix Potter attraction. If you have ever dreamed of frolicking with Peter Rabbit or waddling along with Jemima Puddleduck, this is the place to make those dreams come true.
Potter loved the Lake District and wrote many of her well-loved stories while living not too far from Bowness, in Near Sawrey. The attraction offers a chance to see her magical world come to life. There are special films and a video wall introducing all her classic Tales. After a lovely tour, make your way to the Tailor of Gloucester Tea Room for some scrumptious cake that luckily was not prepared by a mouse.
Lake District
Of course, most people visit Bowness for its stunning country and a hotel in the town is an excellent base from which to explore the achingly beautiful Lake District National Park. Visit Wordsworth's House and see why the famous poet was so inspired by this land. Or if you're up for a challenge, climb Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.
