A magnificent abbey embodying a towering legacy
The area in and around Battle is internationally famous as the place where the foundations for today's Britain were first established. Many people know it simply as '1066 Country', alluding to the famous date associated with it. The town is home to the imposing Battle Abbey, built by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings. Rumour has it that the high altar in the Abbey's church is the spot where King Harold himself fell during the fight.
The town is well aware of its historical importance, and not just with regard to its most famous event. The Yesterday's World Museum on the high street, for example, showcases what life was like for local people during the 19th and 20th centuries, and is geared to both adults and children alike. Similarly, the kids will no doubt enjoy the Smuggler's Adventure at St Clement's Caves, just a few minutes down the road in Hastings. This network of caverns brings the history of smuggling in the region to life with its displays and re-enactments – not to be missed.
Outstanding local cuisine
As if that wasn't enough to entice you, Battle also offers a range of delightful pubs and restaurants to whet your appetite. Of particular note is Nobles Restaurant on the high street, which provides its customers with local dishes made with fresh produce. Likewise, the Netherfield Arms has had customers raving about both its food and friendly service. Whichever part of the town you end up in, there's sure to be a stellar dining experience just around the corner from our Battle hotels.
