Known as a garden city, Pau's beautiful public parks, impressive architecture and tree-lined streets keep visitors coming back year after year. Take a stroll along the Boulevard des Pyrenees to find unrivalled views out across the surrounding mountains, as well as wonderful villas, cafés and restaurants.

Château de Pau is a 14th-century castle located in the heart of the city. Henri de Navarre, the future king of France and Navarre, was born here in 1553 and there is a fascinating museum on site, along with exceptional collections of tapestries and porcelain. Musée Bernadotte, only a short distance away, is the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's top generals who went on to become king of Norway and Sweden.

Take a ride on the Funiculaire de Pau to enjoy amazing views of the local area, or visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts to find a great range of art dating back to the mid-16th century. Catch a play at the intimate Théâtre Saint-Louis, or opt for a show at Théâtre Minotaure Monte Charge, an intriguing performance space housed in a former wine cellar.

Shopping

With more than 1,000 shops and boutiques in the heart of Pau, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to browsing or buying gifts. Place Clemenceau is regarded as the heart of the city's downtown area and a retail hub. Regular flea markets and arts and crafts fairs are also held throughout the city. Head to areas such as Place de la République, Place Marguerite Laborde and Place du Foirail to find a wide variety of stalls.

Eating and drinking

Dining options in Pau are plentiful, with restaurants, cafés and bars to suit all tastes. For excellent French cuisine and great service, try Le Majestic, known in particular for its roast lamb, fish and seafood dishes. L'Amateur de Thés is a popular Japanese restaurant, and Les Pipelettes Restaurant Bistronomique is another top spot for fine dining in Pau.
