Near the end of the war, the city was almost completely demolished. Today, Béthune is the stylish, vibrant French city you must see – it was France's 2011 regional capital of culture. Béthune hotels include B&Bs and recognisable French chains, again a blend of traditional and new.
Historical sights
The modern outlook of Béthune's population contrasts with the classic ambience of the city. This is easily seen in the main town square, which was almost completely destroyed in 1918. Art Deco influences and Flemish architecture are visible on a stroll around the stone back streets.
You can see the French-Belgium border from the top of the belfry, which is 47 metres high. The wooden campanile surrounding the belfry dates back to the 14th century. Rebuilding and restoration has gone on throughout the city for some time, and the town hall was only refinished in 1920. Historical events in Béthune are carved into the hall's stone front.
Things to do in Béthune
Béthune is known for its beer, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample this regional brew. Ch'ti beer is brewed by infusion, and one of just a few in the world still made in this way.
Sports fans can visit the Stade Béthunois to see Béthune's football team in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais league. If you prefer your sport at a leisurely pace, head to Golf de Béthune. There's also a fitness centre and a gym in the area for keeping fit on holiday.
Take a 20-minute drive south to Loisinord, a dry ski slope at Noeux-les-Mines. It's the largest artificial dry-ski and snowboard slope in Europe.
Shopping and souvenirs
On almost every street, Béthune's shops have an emphasis on design. Browse the rails at one of the city's many fashion boutiques, or get some decorating inspiration at an interior design store. Stop for a spot of lunch at a delicatessen, steakhouse or seafood restaurant.
The city also sits right on top of one of France's largest coal mines. As such, the area is big on industrial exports. This means you can find locally-made pottery and earthenware to take home.
