A holiday to Ciutadella, on the west coast of Menorca, has it all. It is a fantastic place to combine the benefits of a city break filled with culture, food and entertainment, with a relaxing beach holiday. And a holiday in Menorca, being the second largest of the Balearic Islands, provides plenty of sandy beaches to choose from.
Fun packed days in and around Ciutadella
You could choose to spend your holiday in one of the modern resorts on the west coast of Menorca but they don’t have the atmosphere and history of Ciutadella. Explore the narrow cobbled streets of the old fortified city and you’ll begin to realise that Ciutadella is a very special place. Admire the town hall, which used to be a royal palace, in the tree lined square of Placa des Born, before heading to the 13th Century Cathedral.
Stroll along the Placa Llibertat and soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the market packed with a colourful array of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. Try traditional Menorcan food in the stunning restaurant, El Guitarre, located in the cathedral area of Ciutadella. The tables are below ground in the atmospheric old wine cellars.
The harbour, situated below the old city is where all the action is. Menorca, unlike Ibiza holidays and Majorca holidays, is not renowned for its nightlife. However the harbour area is filled with restaurants, clubs and bars and is an ideal place to relax with tapas and a cooling drink.
Head inland from Ciutadella and there’s lush green countryside and plenty of archaeological sites to explore. Naveta dels Tudons, a pre-talayotic burial monument, is within driving distance of Ciutadella.
You can’t go on holiday to Spain without enjoying one of its many beautiful beaches, and there are plenty to be found close to Ciutadella, Cala Turqueta being on of the best. Escape the crowds and take a boat trip from the Ciutadella’s harbour to find a near deserted beach in one of the hidden coves along the coast.
