Where to Stay in Bruges
Bruges, with its cobbled streets, medieval architecture, and canals, offers several charming neighbourhoods to explore. Each area has its own unique character, making it easy for visitors to find the perfect place to stay depending on their interests and preferences. Whether you're looking to be close to the action or prefer a quieter, more residential area, Bruges has something for every type of traveller.
The Historic Centre (City Centre)
The Historic Centre is the heart of Bruges and the most popular area for tourists. Staying in this neighbourhood places you within walking distance of the city’s iconic attractions, such as the Belfry, Market Square, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The cobbled streets are lined with a variety of hotels, ranging from charming boutique properties to luxurious options with views of the canals. Staying in the centre means you can easily explore the city's museums, art galleries, and cosy cafés, making it an ideal spot for those who want to be in the midst of Bruges’ medieval charm.
The Canal Area
For a truly picturesque experience, consider staying near the Canal Area. This area offers a more peaceful and romantic atmosphere, with canalside hotels that allow you to enjoy beautiful views of the water and the historic buildings lining the banks. While still close to the city centre, this part of Bruges provides a quieter, more relaxed vibe. It’s perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy the tranquillity of the canals, yet remain close enough to easily explore the major attractions.
Sint-Anna (Sint-Anna Quarter)
A short walk from the city centre, Sint-Anna is a quieter, more residential neighbourhood that offers a mix of local life and convenient access to the city’s top sights. Here, you’ll find hotels tucked away in charming streets lined with traditional Flemish houses and local shops. Sint-Anna is ideal for those looking for a more authentic, relaxed stay, while still being within walking distance of Bruges’ main tourist attractions. The area is also home to the famous Beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it perfect for those interested in exploring Bruges’ history in a quieter setting.
Ezelstraat Area
The Ezelstraat Area is slightly further from the city centre but still within easy reach of the main attractions. Known for its peaceful, tree-lined streets, this residential neighbourhood offers a more laid-back atmosphere with a variety of guesthouses and small hotels. It’s a great option for visitors who prefer a more local experience and enjoy staying in a neighbourhood with fewer tourists. It’s also home to a number of excellent restaurants, shops, and bars, making it a good base for those looking to experience Bruges like a local.
Katelijne Area
If you’re looking for a more modern area that’s still close to the heart of Bruges, the Katelijne Area is a great option. Located near the train station, this neighbourhood offers a wide range of hotels, from budget options to mid-range establishments. It's perfect for visitors arriving by train or those who prefer easy access to transport links while still being within walking distance of the historic centre. The Katelijne area is also close to Minnewater Park, offering a peaceful green space to enjoy when you're not exploring the city.
Bruges offers a variety of neighbourhoods, each with its own charm and advantages. Whether you want to stay in the bustling Historic Centre, enjoy the tranquillity of the Canal Area, or opt for a quieter, more local experience in Sint-Anna or Katelijne, you'll find the perfect place to stay to suit your preferences and make the most of your visit to this beautiful Belgian city.
