Best time to visit Khao Lak
The tropical climate of Khao Lak sees average daytime temperatures varying little between 27°C and 30°C and occasional showers year-round. Some seasons are drier than others, so here’s a breakdown of what to expect.
November to February is the cool season and the best time for Khao Lak holidays. The weather is dry, making it ideal for enjoying the beach. As it’s also the peak tourist period, demand and prices can be high, so you might want to book accommodation in advance.
March to May can get quite hot and humid, with temperatures sometimes climbing over 30°C, and still low rainfall. If you don’t mind the heat, this is a lovely time to visit, with quieter beaches and fewer tourists around.
June to October marks the rainy season in Khao Lak, caused by the southwest monsoon. Expect frequent downpours, with September and October being the wettest months, although they're usually only for a few hours in the afternoon or evening. If you don’t mind the showers and the humidity, you’ll benefit from lush landscapes, fewer tourists and lower prices, but the sea can be rough, so some water activities and boat trips might be limited.
Practical information
Spoken languages: Thai is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas, especially in hotels, restaurants and shops. Learning a few basic Thai phrases will go a long way in winning smiles and getting better treatment.
Local habits and customs: Thai people are known for their politeness and gentle manner, so showing respect and a friendly attitude will help a lot. It’s considered rude to touch someone’s head or point your feet at people or sacred objects. Dress modestly away from the beach, especially when visiting temples, including removing your shoes.
Currency: The Thai currency is the baht (B). ATMs are plentiful, and most major credit or debit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops. However, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for markets, smaller purchases or more remote areas.
Getting around: Songthaews (vans or trucks with basic seating) run some regular routes, but they are mostly available as cheap taxis. Motorbike rental is also an option, but take care on the roads.
Electricity and plug types: Thailand uses a 220V supply with two-prong round- or flat-pin plugs. UK travellers should take a multi-travel adaptor.
Time zone: Thailand is on Indochina Time (ICT), 7 hours ahead of GMT.
