An island symbolised by its windmills

One of the defining symbols of Mykonos is its historic windmills, many of which were designed when the island was under Venetian rule in the 16th century. The windmills were once an important source of income for local people, who used them to mill wheat, and almost half of the structures were built on Chora Hill, which offers extraordinary views over the Aegean Sea.

Authentic Aegean cuisine and spectacular sunsets

Stroll through the picturesque streets of Chora, which contain numerous elegant restaurants serving local specialities like Louza and Melopita, or consider visiting the Aegean Maritime Museum to explore the Aegean Sea's maritime heritage. Another highlight of Mykonos holidays is witnessing the spectacular sunrises and sunsets, which can be enjoyed from practically any location on the island. For one of the best sunset views, however, head to the Little Venice area. Aim to get to a good viewpoint at least half an hour before the sunset, as it will quickly get crowded.

A beach lover's paradise

Mykonos has no shortage of golden sandy beaches, the best known of which is probably the Super Paradise beach. Here, you can spot international celebrities, attend an exclusive party, or just lounge on the beach and soak up the Greek sun. Meanwhile, the Platis Gialos beach is ideal for families, while the Agios Sostis beach is the place to be if you want a little more seclusion away from the busy shops and restaurants. Beaches in the north of the island tend to be less busy than those in the south, although if you're looking for a quieter holiday when the sea is still warm enough for a swim, consider visiting in June or September.

Besides its stunning natural scenery and friendly cosmopolitan atmosphere, another reason millions of people choose Mykonos holidays is the island's fantastic climate. It is blessed with sunshine on more than 300 days each year, and experiences a prolonged dry season with very little rainfall during the summer. Sea temperatures are generally warm enough for comfortable swimming from June until October, although it is still possible to enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea even until early December in some years.
