The Swiss National Museum

Housed in a splendid late 19th-century Historicist building, the Swiss National Museum examines the history of Switzerland from the prehistoric to the contemporary era, and is noted for its comprehensive collection of late medieval artworks. Here, you can also see a special coin collection from the late medieval and Renaissance eras, as well as a fascinating porcelain and faïence exhibition at the Zunfthaus zur Meisen, an impressive 18th-cenutry Baroque building.

The Fraumünster

Built on a former abbey that had been founded in the 9th century, the Fraumünster is an iconic church that was remodelled near the end of the 19th century and is noted for its prominent green spire. A visit to this stunning landmark is a must during a city break in Zurich. Another striking feature of this prominent landmark is its elaborate stained glass windows, which were designed by the distinguished Russian-French artist Marc Chagall.

The Zürich Zoologischer Garten, established in 1929, exhibits hundreds of species represented by well over 2,000 animals. making it a great addition to a weekend in Zurich. The towering Grossmünster, meanwhile, is a prodigious Romanesque church that was built near the turn of the 12th century and features two very handsome domed towers.

If you're up for it, you can head to the top of the Üetliberg mountain, where you can enjoy mind-boggling panoramic views of the city and the adjacent lake. A visit to this mountain is a perfect activity for a short break in Zurich. Alternatively, feel free to take the Polybahn funicular railway, which has run since the 1880s and operates between the ETH Zurich university campus and the Central plaza.
