Cathedral by the Corrib

Dominating the Galway skyline, the beautiful Galway Cathedral can be seen from much of the city, with its spires rising nearly fifty metres into the air. Built in the 1960’s on the banks of the River Corrib, it’s a great example of a modern take on Renaissance architecture. The interior is just as beautiful as the outside, filled with inspirational Catholic iconography, engravings and bright stained-glass windows

Galway Archway

For a step back in time on your cheap Galway holiday, walk under the nearby Spanish Arch, one of the last remaining parts of the town’s 16th century wall. After that, take a short stroll to Galway City Museum; originally its collection focused on ancient artefacts and items dedicated to the history of the city, but it has now expanded its borders to showcase impressive exhibits covering the whole of West Ireland.

Shop Street Shops

To spend some of the cash you saved by booking a cheap holiday in Galway, head to William Street and the adjoining (aptly named) Shop Street where you’ll find a wealth of well-known brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and The Body Shop, next to independent and unique boutiques.

Reflection and Relaxation

If you’re feeling like you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve dropped, why not grab a coffee and wander down to the neighbouring John F. Kennedy Memorial Park (formerly called and sometimes still referred to as Eyre Square). With sculptures and memorials, it’s a great place to relax and watch the world go by.

And for a darker part of the city’s history, take a look at the Lynch Memorial Window on Market Street and its sombre commemorative carving.

Picnic by the Pond

Galway is known for exceptional beaches, drawing visitors from all over to walk and explore the rugged West Irish coastline. We love Silver Strand Beach, which gives fantastic views of Galway Bay, and the scenic Salthill Beach. Actually made of several beaches, some pebbly, some sandy it’s a great place to unwind and have a picnic (we recommend heading to Galway Farmers Market for ingredients). If you’re particularly daring, jump off the concrete diving board, straight into the Atlantic Ocean.
