1. Things to do in Antalya for families

With affordable, direct flights from the UK and myriad resorts to choose from, as well as plenty of things to do for families, holidays in Antalya are a top pick for those seeking sun, sand and sea on a budget. It’s home to some of the best beaches in the region, like Lara Beach, where you can try watersports like parasailing or jet-skiing, or simply enjoy the warm, shallow sea. The beach also houses Sand Land, a quirky open-air gallery of giant sand sculptures. In the city of Antalya itself, there’s a huge amusement park and large aquarium, as well as several museums and ancient ruins. Head to Karaalioglu Park for a picturesque walk along a balcony promenade, offering sweeping views of the city and coast. The Kurşunlu Waterfall and Duden Waterfalls are popular with tourists and locals alike, while more adventurous travellers will find several mountainous hiking areas nearby, offering true solitude in nature.

Don't miss: Exploring Kaleiçi and visiting the Antalya Aquarium.

Best time to visit: April to October.

2. Places to visit in Istanbul as a family

Istanbul is a huge city with plenty to do for all ages. But it need not be overwhelming, with plenty of family-appropriate activities and places to visit with kids. The Grand Bazaar, Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cistern are all must-see tourist spots and great for families with older children, while the Galata Tower has appeal for all ages and offers a fantastic view. If you’re visiting Istanbul with little ones in tow, you might prefer some smaller and slightly quieter spots, like the old Spice Market, the lesser-visited Theodosius Cistern, or even Istanbul Aquarium – a guaranteed hit with younger family members, especially if it’s very hot outside. Both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are stunning spots to visit in Istanbul, and even fairly young children will find wonder in the beautiful architecture – although they’ll need to be old enough to understand that they have to speak quietly and not run around. You could also book a boat trip along the coast, around the Maiden’s Tower or out to the Princes’ Islands. If you’re visiting Istanbul with a baby or child in a pram, make like the locals and head for the shady parks and wide promenades for a stroll and pram nap.

Don't miss: Taking a Bosphorus cruise and visiting the Rahmi M. Koç Museum.

Best time to visit: April to June and September to October.

3. Things to do in Marmaris for families

Marmaris is a pretty destination with plenty of things to do for families, as well as a fantastic coast for swimming, watersports and sunbathing. During the day, make a beeline for the Atlantis Water Park – perfect for little ones and big kids alike. Alternatively, head to the castle and archeology museum to explore the history of the local area, before strolling the pretty canals in search of authentic Turkish cuisine and fun souvenirs. Before you head back to your hotel, treat your kids to some rides at the Lunapark amusement park. The Marmaris Burunucu Macera Park offers outdoor activities for adventurous kids and beach access too, making for a relaxed and not-too-touristy day out. Marmaris National Park (or “Milli Parkı”) is a great expanse of forest with picnic spots, boardwalks and marked trails – a great shady activity for the hot season in Turkey. Whether you’re seeking luxury all-inclusive or a cheap holiday to Marmaris, you’ll find accommodation options for every budget here.

Don't miss: Atlantis Waterpark and family-friendly boat trips.

Best time to visit: May to September.

4. Things to do in Side for families

Side is a popular resort town, offering a wide choice of all-inclusive hotels backing onto the long sandy beach that stretches all the way along the coast by Side old town. Holidays to Side can be as luxurious and extravagant as you like, with plenty of 5-star accommodation on offer, but there are dozens of budget-friendly options too. One of the top things to do here, of course, is swim in the gloriously warm and usually calm sea, try your hand at watersports, or sunbathe on the beach. You can also stroll the mile or so along the promenade that lines the beach and head into Side town. In the evenings, you’ll find a lively, friendly atmosphere and plenty of shops and stalls selling souvenirs and fashion pieces until late. There are ruins of the ancient town to explore too, including an amphitheatre, temple and museum. Our top tip is to visit in the late afternoon or evening, when the temperature has dropped a little and you might get a picturesque sunset. The marina is a pretty spot for a bite to eat or a lunchtime drink, and you can also pick up boat trips from here.

Don't miss: Touring the Roman Theatre and Side Museum.

Best time to visit: April to October.
