1. Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Embrace the countryside with a walk through the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are many different sights and routes to choose from: walk down through the deep decline that forms the Devil’s Punchbowl, take in the wildlife at the 13th-century-founded Frensham Ponds or admire the sweeping countryside views from Box Hill. Whichever route you choose, you can guarantee there will be splendidly green views in every direction. Browsing Surrey holidays? The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty isn’t to be missed!

Best for: Countryside treks and trails.

While you’re there: Also in the AONB is the Deepdene Trail, Newlands Corner and Broadwood’s Folly.

2. WWF Living Planet Centre

The WWF Living Planet Centre is a great shout for kids, who can enjoy the interactive activities on offer. This educational and visitor centre allows all to learn more about protecting the natural world, with a range of hands-on events such as family workshops and different area zones that show film footage and information about oceans, forests and more.

Best for: Learning about the environment.

While you’re there: Go for a stroll along Pyford Lock.

3. Farnham Castle Keep

Looking for historical things to do in Dorset? Pay a visit to the 12th-century Farnham Castle Keep, which sits at the top of a hill and combines medieval and ancient splendour. With its motte and ‘shell keep’ behind its medieval castle, it makes for an impressive sight. Today it’s managed by English Heritage, but it was once a site where the likes of Queen Victoria and prominent Bishops stayed; it truly makes for a regal day out.

Best for: English Heritage sites.

While you’re there: Also in Farnham is the 12th-century Waverly Abbey, also a free entry English Heritage site.

4. Guildford guided walk

The town of Guildford is an interesting place to visit with its bustling high street, but it’s also a historic town that you can learn more about on a free guided walking tour, which are hosted by expert volunteers. The town spans a whopping 1000 years of history, so it’s truly not a forgettable town. Chances are you’ll discover this for yourself during the informative tour, which tells you all about its Saxon origins right up to the present day. If there’s a particular angle of Guildford to like to find out more about, then there are also a range of themed tours to choose from: from ghosts and Georgian Guildford to pubs and Lewis Carroll. Take your pick!

Best for: Walking tours.

While you’re there: Swing by the Guildford Farmers Market, located on the High Street, which takes place on the first Tuesday of every month.

5. The Lightbox

The award-winning Lightbox is one of the most cultural free things to do in Surrey. This gallery and museum features an interactive museum with permanent collections detailing Woking’s history, modern British art and striking sculptures, along with numerous changing exhibitions. There’s also a regular programme of interesting events, such as comedy performances, open mic nights and arts and crafts workshops, although these are likely to come at an extra charge. The building itself is an interesting work of art, too; it was designed by the same architect of London Eye fame, a wooden birdbox-like structure.

Best for: Arts, crafts and culture.

While you’re there: You can also see one of their art installations at Woking train station.

6. Grayshott Pottery tour

There aren’t many potters left in the country, so a visit to Grayshott Pottery is a rare chance to see a traditional craft in action. They’ve been in operation for over 50 years and produce plates and dishes for many high street food brands. During the week they offer a free tour called the ‘Journey of the Clay’ which takes in the entire process, from taking the first lump of clay, through the workshopping process and finally into the fine finished products that they are renowned for. After the tour, try your best not to be tempted by the items on display in the Emporium!

Best for: Going behind the scenes.

While you’re there: There’s also a studio gallery where you can see artists in action.
