Victoria Palace Theatre

A guide to the Victoria Palace Theatre in the West End

This charming theatre celebrated its 100th anniversary in November 2011, although the site originally comprised a hotel and concert room in the 19th century, when it was called Moy's Music Hall. Today, the Victoria Palace Theatre contains 1,550 seats and benefits from a fantastic location just minutes from Victoria Underground, railway station, and bus links to Heathrow and Gatwick. The theatre features an impressive grey marble foyer in its interior and a beautiful canopy and facade, all of which have been carefully restored to their original condition.

By the 1950s, the Victoria Palace Theatre had developed a strong association with The Crazy Gang, a group of talented entertainers who starred in many hit performances here such as Together Again (1947), Jokers Wild (1954) and Clown Jewels (1959). The group, comprising Jimmy Nervo, Jimmy Gold, Charlie Naughton, Chesney Allen, Teddy Knox and Bud Flanagan, were particularly popular with the Royal Family and achieved a large fan base in the United States.

The venue held the popular musical Fame from 2000 to 2001, a show that was originally produced in Miami in 1988, and explores the ambitions and challenges faced by a group of students at a performing arts school. Between 2003 and 2004, the theatre also presented the compilation musical Tonight's the Night, which featured the music of the renowned British singer and songwriter Rod Stewart, and was produced by the successful comedian Ben Elton.

In 2005, the Victoria Palace celebrated the West End musical premier of Billy Elliot, which quickly achieved critical acclaim and received rave views from newspapers. The show, which explores the plight of a motherless boy who possesses a rare talent in a time of social upheaval during the UK miners' strike, has earned numerous Laurence Olivier Awards. The show's tremendous success in the West End has also inspired other adaptations in New York, Sydney, Seoul and several other cities across the world.
