Sondheim Theatre

An overview of the Sondheim Theatre in London's West End

Minutes from Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus Underground stations, the charming Sondheim Theatre in the West End celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007 and has held numerous critically acclaimed performances during its time.

This two-tier venue features a beautiful Italian Renaissance-style interior and held its first performance, The Sugar Bowl, on October 8th, 1907. The theatre is housed in an attractive Grade II Listed building and was renovated in 2009, when extra seating was introduced to the dress circle level.

Starring some of the world's most distinguished actors and actresses

The venue has attracted some of the best talent in British theatre, including the eminent English actor and director Sir Michael Scudamore Redgrave, the BAFTA award winning actress Miranda Richardson, the internationally renowned German-American actress Marlene Dietrich, and the Oscar-nominated actor and director Sir Kenneth Branagh. The venue held a production of The Hobbit between 2001 and 2002 and the popular music The Rocky Horror Show in 2003, a revival of the original West End production of 1973.

An intimate venue in a beautifully restored building

The Sondheim Theatre also held the 10,000th showing of the internationally acclaimed musical Les Miserables in 2010, which showcases the story of the French peasant Jean Valjean who, in impoverished early 19th-century France, received a lengthy prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving nephew. Based on the 19th-century novel by the talented French writer Victor Hugo, Les Mis‚rables was first produced in Paris in 1980 and has won a host of prestigious awards, including the Tony Award for Best Music.
