A favourite with theatre fans, the Princes of Wales Theatre has an illustrious past. It celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2014 and is benefiting from a substantial renovation to mark its 120th anniversary in 2004. This elegant central London venue is a short walk from Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus Underground stations, as well as numerous bus stops.
The Prince of Wales Theatre is a convenient choice for people visiting the West End's extraordinary restaurants, cafes and nightlife venues, whether it's before or after a show. It's also within walking distance of the famous Trafalgar Square and world-class National Gallery, as well as numerous hotels and other accommodation establishments.
One of the most important events in the theatre's history was in 1892, when it showed the musical In Town, arguably the first music comedy to be shown in the West End. Produced by the influential English theatre Manager George Edwardes, the show depicted late Victorian ideas and customs, and set the scene for many more highly successful musical comedies in subsequent decades.
The Prince of Wales Theatre also held the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Aspects of Love, which was shown from 1989 to 1992. This musical was renowned for its song Love Changes Everything, a major UK chart hit sung by Don Black and Charles Hart. Other notable performances at this venue include The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin (1941), South Pacific (1988-1989) and the Witches of Eastwick (2001).
The theatre is housed in an attractive Grade II Listed building and now has a seating capacity of 1,160, higher than its original capacity of approximately 1,000 when it opened. The Prince of Wales Theatre has also presented the much loved jukebox musical Mamma Mia!, which was shown for more than eight years between 2004 and 2012, and has been one of the most successful musicals ever.
