Gillian Lynne Theatre formerly known as the New London

As the theatre's previous name might suggest, the Gillian Lynne Theatre is one of the West End's newer theatre venues, although a music hall had existed at this site as early as the Elizabethan period. Situated in bustling Covent Garden, this venue is close to plenty of restaurants, cafes and boutique shops, and is within walking distance of Oxford Street. It is also just minutes from Holborn and Covent Garden Underground stations, as well as the West End's vibrant nightlife scene.

A history

Before the construction of the current theatre, the site was the home of the Middlesex Music Hall, later rebuilt and renamed as the New Middlesex Theatre of Varieties just after the Edwardian period. This venue produced Kissing Time (1919), which featured a number of acclaimed actors and actresses including Yvonne Arnaud and George Grossmith.

Also used for the TV show This is Your Life

During the 1970s, the New London Theatre was also used as a television and conference studio, and was bought by the Really Useful Group, owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, in 1991. The venue was used for This Is Your Life, a show that was based on an earlier American version with the same name and was presented by Eamonn Andrews, the popular Irish TV and radio host.

One of the theatre's most successful productions was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which began in March 2003 and was a revival of earlier West End productions of the musical in the 1970s and 1990s. From 1981 to 2002, the theatre also produced the CATS musical, which is one of the longest-running West End musicals of all time and starred numerous renowned actors such as Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige.
