Apollo Victoria Theatre

A guide to the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London's West End

Virtually a stone's throw from Victoria's Underground and large railway station, the Apollo Victoria Theatre is one of London's most popular theatre venues, designed by the distinguished architects William Edward Trent and Ernest Wamsley Lewis in 1929.

Perfectly located

Thanks to its excellent tube and rail links, the Apollo Victoria Theatre is very easy to get to, whether you're travelling from other areas of London, the rest of the UK, or from abroad. Victoria also benefits from regular coach links to Heathrow Airport, as well as a fast 30-minute train service to Gatwick Airport, so you'll have no trouble getting to the venue from a flight.

From a world-class cinema to a world-class theatre

The venue opened in 1930, and originally operated as a cinema before it was converted into a theatre in 1981. One of the most notable theatrical performances here was The Sound of Music, which was shown from 1981 to 1982 as part of the West End's revival of the original Broadway run of 1959.

Another particularly success show was the rock musical Starlight Express, the music for which was produced by one of Britain's most acclaimed composers, Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show was so popular that it became one of the longest-running West End shows of all time, presenting more than 7,400 performances in total. The Apollo Victoria Theatre also held a revival of the Saturday Night Fever musical between 2004 and 2006, which featured the actor Shaun Williamson from Eastenders and preceded an 11-month national tour.

Renowned for its hit musical Wicked

Soon after it first showing, Wicked, an adaptation of the famous Gregory Maguire book of the same name, received an outstanding critical reception. The show became one of the most successful in West End history, winning the coveted Audience Award for Most Popular Show in 2010 and earning several Laurence Olivier Award nominations as well.
