Romeo and Juliet Description

Since its first staging in the 1590s, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has broken the hearts of theatregoers around the world, thanks to its timeless, wrenching portrayal of love, loss, and the fragility of youth.

We meet Romeo, a barely grown man who spots a new face at a party he shouldn't be attending and falls head over heels in love with the daughter of his father's worst enemy. What follows is a tale of secret trysts, madcap schemes, friendships turned sour, and the worst kind of misunderstanding.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's Artistic Director Erica Whyman captured the public imagination in 2016 with her production of A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Play for the Nation. Now she presents a new vision of Romeo and Juliet that floods the stage with the energy of youth. In this production, as in 2016, the established cast of actors will be joined on stage by young people from RSC Associate Schools.

Romeo and Juliet will be performed at the Barbican alongside Macbeth and the Merry Wives of Windsor as part of the RSC's autumn Season in London. The play stars Bally Gill and Karen Fishwick as the iconic lovers, and it'll run from 2 November 2018 to 19 January 2019.
