King Lear Description

Packed with sibling rivalry, warfare and betrayals, Shakespeare's King Lear returns to the London stage to entrance a new audience. This time around, the tortured King is played by Sir Ian McKellen in what the Guardian has described as "a massive performance", while the Telegraph called the show a "triumphant production."

For those who don't know, King Lear is one of Shakespeare's most powerful and darkest plays. It centres around the character of Lear, a monarch who wills his kingdom to two ungrateful daughters before repenting and realising the error of his ways as he descends into madness. A tragic tale of misplaced love and the burden of power, the timeless play is constantly reinvented for each generation.

This production of Lear, being staged at the Duke of York theatre, has been directed by Jonathan Munby, whose previous credits include acclaimed versions of Antony and Cleopatra, the Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure and Julius Caesar.

McKellen returns to a role that he last played in 2007, while fellow cast members appearing alongside the Harry Potter star include Sinéad Cusack (Stealing Beauty and V For Vendetta), who plays the Earl of Kent, and Anita-Joy Uwajeh, a rising talent who plays the key role of Cordelia. Book your tickets today to share in this unforgettable royal tragedy.
