Don Quixote Description

Often heralded as the first modern novel, Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote still endures some 400 years later. The story follows the adventures of Alonso Quixano, a Castilian noble who has read so many books about the chivalrous tales of old that he begins to lose his sanity and heads off on a riotous quest to become a nomadic knight, like those in the days of yore.

Accompanied by Sancho Panza, his ever-faithful, and equally ill-prepared servant, Don Quixote de la Mancha (as he names himself) takes up lance and sword and heads off on a hilarious journey through medieval Spain. He sets out to defend the helpless, right some wrongs, vanquish evil, and bring a sense of justice to a chaotic world.

The duo prove to be utterly hapless and unprepared, and Don Quixote slowly loses his grip on reality as each eccentric enterprise goes by, and the romantic ideals of his books seem further away than ever.

With David Threlfall in the title role, and Rufus Hound as Sancho Panza, along with a 20-strong company of actors and a band of live musicians, this rambunctious Royal Shakespeare Company production follows a sold-out run at Stratford-upon-Avon's Swan Theatre in 2016, and marks four centuries since Cervantes' death.
